DEC 19, 2011 - iPhone Meteor Counter App is an unusual new app for iPhone (and iPad, and iPod Touch) from NASA. If you're carrying your device around with you pretty much all the time anyway (as I do my iPhone), installing this free app will allow you to become a citizen scientist, contributing to a NASA project which is attempting to keep track of the more than 40 tons of meteoroids that strike our planet every day. Besides counting these apparitions, the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office (which sponsored this app) is looking to "discover new meteor showers, pinpoint comet debris streams, and map the distribution of meteoroids around Earth's orbit." The idea is to have the device running the app whenever you're outside at night, and tap on it whenever you see a meteor. NASA does the rest. Want to play along?
