They're of course handy for setting up nighttime excursions to go out and gaze at the Moon, stars and planets, but they go way beyond that. One of my favorite applications is to see the night sky the way it looked hundreds or thousands of years ago, and the way it will look hundreds or thousands of years into the future. Free Planetarium Programs gives you a couple dozen options, and provides helpful descriptions of each program's features. I've got maybe a dozen planetarium programs here, including some rather expensive commercial offerings.
